The Composition as a Key Element of Good Photographs

One of the most essential aspects of photography is the composition of the photo. In photography, the composition is the arrangement of parts of a scene to form a pleasing visual outcome. The composition includes both arrangement and choice of viewpoint. The composition is most critical when taking landscapes. Without knowledge of composition, the picture is a failure. Composition relies on two things: photographic elements and the principles of photographic art.

Photographic Elements

It is the visual elements in a photo that can turn a simple subject into a striking photo. Here are the main elements in a composition are: line, color, shape, form, tone, texture, space, depth, and sharpness.

Line - There are different types of line in your composition such as straight,      diagonal, curvy, zigzag, etc. that the eye follows within the scene.

Color -  Different colors have a different impact on an image and it is characterized by attributes such as hue, saturation, and value.

Shape -  It is a two- dimensional area and marked out by edges.

Form - It is basically a three- dimensional shape.

Tone - It is a shade and light variations.

Texture - The surface detail of shapes or forms and they would have the feel of the real thing. Capture texture is mostly based on one element that is light

Space -  it is divided into two types: positive space (space occupied by a space or forms) and negative space (space between shape or forms).

Depth - It is a two- dimensional medium and you can create depth in the actual scene. Depth can be created by choosing your composition carefully by including objects in the foreground, middle ground, and background. Another useful technique is object overlapping and the viewer naturally recognizes these layers and mentally separates them out.

Principles of Photographic Art

It refers to the organization of the elements of a picture or how the individual elements are used. It includes Unity, harmony, color, variety, movement, contrast, balance, proportion, patterns and symmetry, focus and viewpoint.

Unity - It clear the concept that how elements are organized, how it forms one piece.

Harmony - It reduces discordant and unnecessary elements. It makes a well

the ordered and simple outcome

Movement - It implied a movement into a scene or along a line.

Proportion - It is the relative quantity of different elements.

Patterns and Symmetry - It can be both natural and man-made. Use of elements in an organized manner introduces a dynamic to the picture. Another composition technique is to break the symmetry or pattern in some way.

Focus - It controls how much sharpness there is at any given point through the depth of field. Viewer's eye is naturally drawn to the sharpest part of the picture.

Viewpoint - Before photographing your subject, take time to think about the viewpoint because it has a massive impact on the composition of your photo. You can shoot your photograph from eye level, high level, down at ground level, from the back and so on.
